Learn when an LVP chip or scratch can be cleaned or touched up, when a plank may need replacement, and how to spot seam, subfloor or moisture problems.

New flooring can only perform as well as the surface supporting it. Before installation, evaluate flatness, movement, damaged sections, moisture conditions and product-specific substrate requirements; targeted repair is often better than covering an unresolved problem.
Subfloor Repair & Floor Leveling: scope and estimate guidance
A chip or white scratch on luxury vinyl plank (LVP) can be cosmetic, or it can be a sign that a plank needs replacement. The right fix depends on whether the mark is surface scuffing, damage through the wear layer, a broken edge, or movement under the floor. Start with the flooring maker's care and repair instructions for your exact product. A visible touch-up may improve appearance without restoring the original wear layer or warranty.

| What you see | First step | When to get the floor assessed | | --- | --- | --- | | A dull streak that does not catch a fingernail | Remove loose grit with a soft tool, then clean as the product maker directs. | If the mark remains or spreading abrasion affects several planks. | | A narrow white line or small chip | Check the product's approved touch-up options; test any repair product in an inconspicuous spot. | If the wear layer is cut through, color cannot be matched, or the area is heavily trafficked. | | A broken corner or seam | Avoid filling across a moving joint. Keep the area free of grit. | Have the locking edge, adjacent planks and subfloor checked for movement before choosing repair or replacement. | | A raised, soft or repeatedly separating area | Stop treating it as a cosmetic mark. Document the condition and look for an active moisture source. | Seek a flooring assessment after any leak has been stopped and the affected area has been properly dried. |
A mark across the top of one plank is different from damage at a click-lock joint. Forcing filler into a seam can interfere with movement or conceal a larger installation issue.
Vacuum or sweep away grit using a soft attachment. Use a cleaner and cloth approved for the specific LVP product, and follow its instructions on dilution and drying. Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, strong solvents, heat guns, steam and aggressive buffing unless the manufacturer expressly allows the method. A scuff caused by residue may come off with cleaning; a gouge through the printed layer will not.
If the floor is new or covered by a product or installation warranty, photograph the spot and review the written terms before applying a repair compound. Keep the brand, collection and any spare plank information. Those details matter if the damaged plank must be replaced.
A small isolated chip on a stable plank may be suitable for a manufacturer-approved color-matched repair kit. Match the floor's several tones on a spare piece or hidden area first. Follow the kit's preparation, application and cure instructions exactly. A touch-up is primarily cosmetic: it may remain visible in certain light and does not recreate the factory finish.
A surface scratch may need only approved cleaning. Do not assume a spoon, marker, clear coat or generic laminate putty is safe for every vinyl plank. Product construction and finish vary. If a repair kit is not specified for your floor, ask the manufacturer or a qualified flooring professional before proceeding.
Replacement is more likely to make sense when a chip exposes the core, an edge is broken, the scratch is long or deep, the plank is lifting, or the damage repeats because the floor flexes. Matching planks may be difficult when a product has been discontinued or the existing floor has changed color with use. The method also depends on whether the floor is floating or glued down and where the damaged plank sits.
If there is a leak, recurring moisture, a soft spot or widespread buckling, address the source and assess the substrate before flooring putback. Final Floors handles flooring-related repair and post-mitigation putback; water extraction and structural or mold remediation require the appropriate provider. A cosmetic patch cannot solve hidden moisture or a moving subfloor.
Use suitable felt pads under furniture, entry mats that the flooring maker permits, and a soft vacuum attachment. Lift heavy items instead of dragging them. Follow the product's written care directions for cleaners, rolling loads, rugs and sunlight exposure. A furniture scuff needs a different response from a seam failure or moisture problem.
Sometimes an isolated cosmetic chip can be made less visible with a repair product approved for the floor. A broken locking edge, exposed core, movement or moisture may call for a plank or area assessment instead.
A cosmetic touch-up does not recreate the manufacturer's factory wear layer. Follow the flooring and repair-product instructions and review applicable warranty terms before working on the floor.
Do not automatically fill a moving joint. Gaps may result from temperature changes, an installation issue, a damaged locking edge or substrate movement. Identify the cause before choosing a remedy.
Stop the leak and complete appropriate drying and assessment first. After mitigation, flooring and subfloor conditions can be evaluated for a project-specific repair or putback scope.
For isolated cosmetic damage, start with the product's instructions. For loose planks, damaged seams, moisture or a larger repair, Final Floors can review the flooring scope and discuss options.
