LVP Flooring in Atlanta: How to Choose the Right Wear Layer for Your Home
Compare LVP wear layers, product construction, room conditions and installation preparation for a Metro Atlanta flooring project.
What a wear layer tells you
A wear layer is the clear protective layer above the printed design on luxury vinyl plank. Its thickness is commonly expressed in mils, or thousandths of an inch. It is one specification to compare, alongside the surface treatment, core construction, locking system, installation method and the exact product warranty. Wear-layer thickness alone does not establish scratch resistance, expected lifespan or suitability for a commercial space.
Choose for the room and its use
Tell your estimator about pets, children, rolling chairs, direct sunlight and daily traffic. Compare the manufacturer’s residential or commercial use approval for the exact collection. A thicker wear layer can be a useful comparison point, but a 20-, 22- or 30-mil label is not a guarantee that a product fits every application. Ask for the specification sheet and installation instructions before selecting a floor.
Atlanta basements, sunlight and climate control
For a basement, slab, sunroom or room with large windows, verify the product’s moisture, temperature and sunlight limitations. Do not assume an SPC core makes a product appropriate for an unconditioned room. Waterproof product claims do not make the room, seams or subfloor flood-proof. Resolve active leaks and evaluate the substrate before installation.
Preparation prevents avoidable problems
The exact manufacturer determines required substrate flatness, moisture testing, vapor protection, expansion clearances and acclimation. Flatness and level are different measurements. Attached cushion does not automatically replace an approved vapor barrier; additional underlayment may be prohibited. Gapping or damaged joints can have several causes and require inspection rather than a diagnosis from appearance alone.
Compare the complete estimate
Ask the written estimate to identify the exact collection, installation method, removal, subfloor repairs, preparation, transitions and trim. Discuss products from brands such as COREtec, Shaw, Mohawk or Mannington by exact collection; brand names are not proof of stock or dealer authorization.
