How to Protect Hardwood Floors from Furniture (And Why Most People Get It Wrong)
Protect hardwood finishes with compatible furniture pads, careful moving and product-specific care; compare recoating, repair and refinishing for existing damage.
Start with compatible protection
Check the flooring and finish manufacturer’s care instructions before choosing felt pads, coasters, rug pads or chair mats. Materials that work with one finish may mark or discolor another. Use protection sized for the furniture load and contact area. Inspect it regularly and replace dirty, worn or loose pads.
Keep grit away from the finish
Clean furniture contact points and the floor before fitting pads. Grit under a pad or chair mat can abrade the surface. Use the approved cleaning method and avoid excessive water. Dining chairs and frequently moved furniture deserve regular checks because movement concentrates wear in the same area.
Move furniture carefully
Lift furniture where practical and use sufficient help for heavy pieces. Any sliders or moving equipment must be compatible with the floor and the load; test cautiously and keep contact surfaces clean. Protection reduces risk but does not guarantee a scratch-free move or prevent every dent under heavy furniture.
Rugs and newly finished floors
Confirm both backing compatibility and when rugs may be placed after finishing. Do not assume every rubber, latex, plastic or combination pad is safe. Dry-to-touch and full cure differ. Follow the exact finish instructions before returning furniture or covering the surface, and address leaks or unusual moisture conditions instead of hiding them under a rug.
When marks need professional assessment
A compatible recoat may help some surface wear, while deeper damage may require sanding or board repair. Remaining wood, prior refinishing and finish contamination affect the options. Seasonal movement or cupping should be evaluated before refinishing. Final Floors can assess hardwood in Metro Atlanta and explain the appropriate scope.
